Care of Indian Flap shell turtle (Lissemys Punctata):
My 12" Flap shell turtle |
flap shelled turtle from beneath |
It is a very common fresh water turtle found in India and it can be found fairly easily in ponds, steams, marshes, near our house during rainy season and in fish markets. they have a soft leathery type of shell and they are called as flap shell because they have flaps on the plastron above their legs which cover their legs when they retract in the shell. They have a snout which can be seen clearly in the picture above. its size ranges from about 240 to 370 mm in length.
male is on right with elongated body and female is on left with more ovoid shape of body, also see the longer tail of male. if you want to know further about differentiating between male and female you can consult the following link- http://www.chelonia.org/sexing/sexing_L_punctata.htm
after mating the eggs are laid 2 times in a year in a batch of 2-12 in a nest in sandy or muddy area exposed to sun.
.
Diet:
It is omnivorous means it eats everything ranging from snails, frogs, fishes, shrimps, aquatic plants, flowers, fruits, plant leaves etc. mine loved aquatic plant (you can buy them from fish store, they are available now a days for setting up planted aquariums, try to get cheap ones or you can directly get them from outside ponds and marshes if you know any), you can also try to make them eat artificial turtle food but i don't know if they will eat it or not, mine just refused to eat it, no matter how much I tried he would never eat it, give it a try may be you will be the lucky one.
Enclosure:
They prefer quite and stagnant waters with sand or mud as a substrate since they like to burrow in it, so if you have an outside pond then it would come in handy, also as with all the turtle species you will have to provide an area for basking in their pond. if you are keeping them in a tank or an aquarium then it should have sand or mud as a substrate, the filtration ideally should be external filters (you will need a powerful filter as they tend to be dirty) my advice would be to not to opt for power filters but go for external canister filters if you cannot afford external power filters , in external canister filters a pump is placed inside the tank which pumps water to a canister placed outside the tank with its outlet connected to tank, the water gets filtered in the substrate of the canister and then flows back from the outlet to the tank. provide a bulb and a platform for them on which they can bask.
A basic idea of the enclosure you can get from the sketch below:-

above layout is applicable for setting up the tank for any turtle, this is a basic layout showing all the things which are absolutely necessary for setting up the tank more features can be added based on your creativity.
breeding:-
they become adult around 2-3 years of age. male and female can be seen in the following image:

First blog that had some useful info!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
u r welcome
DeleteSiddharth - glad that you put up a blog and basic care steps for a local turtle :). Thanks much!
DeleteI do have some questions on a flapshell that I'm having for the last 12 days or so. This was caught in a fishing net in a pond and then thru various hands landed up in my home. The guy hasn't eaten a bit. I've kept him in a separate tank from my red-eared sliders, and tried spinach/lettuce, fruits, pellets, shrimp, chicken liver, live fish, live tubiflex worms... but he isn't interested a bit. Probably still stressed after a traumatic transfer of habitat. Since flapshells prefer soft substrate, I've put him in a tank with sand bottom. Thats Problem Number One.
But now, I'm seeing another problem. I see some wigly worm-like creatures on the body, at different locations, starting from the carapace, the plastron, neck and the feet. These appear and sometimes vanish on their own ! They are whitish in colour, with one end attached to the body of the turtle, while the other end loose and wiggling. Length ranges from 0.5 - 1 cm. I've tried googling to figure out what these are, and if these are any kind of parasites, but no luck so far. Can't be planaria, as thats free-living and not a parasite. Can't be maggots either, as it looks different. The poor thing doesn't look stressed or anything, but I think I'm getting stressed out, as its not eating :(. Right now i'm keeping it dry for most of the time to see, if things change.
If you or other experts have any comments on feeding tips and what these wigglies could be, please do let me know.
Thanks, -Ranjan.
since it is a wild caught specimen so best for you and for the turtle would be if you can manage to release him safely back in wild conditions because wild caught specimens are very difficult to keep in a tank and feed. so its best if you release him back.
Deleteand about the white worms- i have never encountered anything like that but if you can provide us with a pic or smthing then it wud be better than guessing, but my best guess is that they are either due to sand substrate you used (if it was old and left drying outside)or tubifex worms left in the tank. and if you insist on keeping it then do let me know so that i can help you on its feeding as for now don't get panicked as they can go for a long time without eating and still don't have any side effects. And i would advise you not to keep him outside as the turtle would be already stressed due to rapid change in the habitat and now he has to endure dry spells so return him back to his tank after thoroughly cleaning the tank and see for signs of disease like sluggishness, unnatural swimming patterns, unnatural behavior, restlessness, itching etc..
DeleteThank you so much for the help n knowledgeable things you've given above just found one today itself while driving on a lake side....
DeleteGood Evening Sir,

DeleteI have an indian flap shelled turtle.. Suddenly i noticed a swelling on his back leg n is spongy.. I took him to a vet.. She adviced me to soak him in warm water with epsom salt.. Please help as this is not helping
ReplyDeletesorry for late reply, but first tell us the color of the swelling whether it is black- grayish (bacterial) or white in color(fungal) becoz treatment is different in both the cases. also see if the turtle is having any problem in swimming, if it is having problems means problem is more severe and needs extensive treatment and medical help may be. for now you can follow these steps:
Delete1 first remove the turtle from its tank becoz that is the source of infection and keep him dry in a seperate box or bucket don't soak him in water and give him sunlight and warmth through a lamp with bulb, put him in water only 2 times in a day for about 15-20 mins for food and pooping only that also in water that is only up to its legs and beginning of shell- this is called dry docking.
2. clean and dry the tank completely.
3. continue dry docking for at least 15 days.
4.soak the problem area with betadine and neosporin powder 2 times a day. f you cant apply it directly on the growth then let it dribble n his leg and reach the area on its own.
if you follow these steps there will surely be some improvement, looking forward to your reply.
M waiting for your reply.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get on?
ReplyDeleteask at your local fish stores, or at fish markets where they are sold for food. if you live nearby a river or stream then you can easily find them on your own. :)
Deletebest of luck
I also have an indian flap shaped turtle😮🤔🤨😅
DeleteFor how long can flapshelled turtle stay out of water
ReplyDeleteFlapshells can stay out of water for days, as long as they have water to drink. Not that they would like to, but they can survive. They are well adapted to drought conditions. This is what wiki has to say:
Delete"These turtles have been known to be very well adapted, both morphologically and behaviorally to drought conditions. The turtle utilizes mainly burrowing and moving from water hole to water hole in order to avoid desiccation. The femoral flaps that cover the retracted legs serve to help the turtle survive dry conditions. During a time of drought, the turtles enter a time of estivation in an attempt to survive the dry conditions. Although many turtles die during drought conditions, some turtles have been reported to survive up to 160 days".
I agree completely to what has been said above because based on my knowledge also i can say that they can live without water for 4-5 months if needed.
DeleteHello sir. Can i get ur email id to discuss about turtle
DeleteSir,I found Indian flapshell turtle in my land anonymous.I found his shell white white circle type something settle. And I kept the breed inside the cemented tank with well docorated and rich space and sunlight. What should I add to his in food so the growth should be life long.

If it eats turtle food it's best if isn't then cover the pallets with thin layer of atta(wheat flour)
DeleteMine on can't it food 5 6 month is it normal or any problem in he???!?
ReplyDeleteSame problem
DeleteI have brought it under the lake land while digging the JCG, please suggest the healthy local food to grown in our House, is there any laws do not treat like as pet.
ReplyDeleteWhat does turtle eats
ReplyDeleteSir, my flapshell turtle don't want to be in an aquarium which has water of about 40 litres. It shows some traits of sinking in the water. It's behavior is very violent and my other turtle which is Indian spotted turtle lives in the same aquarium and doesn't show any traits of sinking in. Flapshell turtle has length of about 3 inches. And it frequently tries to be on the carapace of spotted turtle violently. When I separated it from spotted turtle then it becomes very sluggish and it likes to be in a very shallow water just 2 inches deep with respect to it. And it doesn't have ability to swim in deep water which spotted turtle shows that's why I cant keep them both in the same aquarium. If I put them both in same aquarium then spotted cant be in shallow water it's behavior changes and flapshell cant be in deep water because it tries to spread it legs everywhere and finally it sinks down. Is it normal for a flapshell to not swim in a deep water?
ReplyDeleteCan we keep 2 flagshell together?

ReplyDeleteThey eat aquatic earthworms
DeleteKeep him in the sun for 2-3 hrs daily. He should be exposed to the sun, turtles like taking naps in the sun. My turtle too showed the same trait and I tried this trick. Now he is hungry all the time.
ReplyDeleteHow much time flapsheel Turtle live without water
ReplyDeleteI am waiting sir can u plz tell me
DeleteThey can stay out of water for max 160 days....if they get water atleast for drinking...but please dont keep them out for long...most of them dont like to be kept in water so...what i do with my indian flapshell turtle is that i keep him in water all night and also put his food in water he eats it till morning..water level is 1 or 2 inch above his body surface...and throughout the day he sleeps in aa shaded place....
DeleteI have an indian flapshell turtle. It is about 3-4 years old. We have tried to make it eat many things like fruits, vegetables, pellets, etc but it ate only cheese.Last year in winter it used to eat every 2-3 days but this year he has not eaten anything since almost a month. It doesn't like to bask in the sun. lf we keep it in lukewarm water the skin and some parts of the shell including the nose become red and it looks like it will bleed. After removing it from the water it becomes normal after a few minutes. We are not keeping it in the water for more than a few minutes. The temperature of our city is from 3 to 16 degrees. What should we do? Is it suffering from any disease or hybernating?
ReplyDeleteDon't put in lukewarm water cause turtles are cold blooded animals which means they change their temp as the surrounding so puting him in hit or lukewarm water can cause him high temp (fever)...if he is not eating then it must be due to cold surrounding...but don't keep him starved for so long...instead take him on your lap..slant his body to 45 degrees upwards...and with a help of dropper feed him watermelon or carrot or spinach juice...after feeding 1 ml keep him down for 1 min then repeat the process...but remember to feed him from corners of his mouth cause if you feed him from front food will go in wind pipe instead of food pipe
DeleteAnd turtles eat 10 to 12 ml of liquid food in a day
DeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI HAVE A INDIAN FLAPSHELL TURTLE. I FOUND HIM ROADSIDE OUTSIDE THE FARM AND RIVER AREA 2 YEARS BACK. SINCE I BOUGHT HIM HOME HE IS EATING COOKED WHITE RICE OR WHITE RICE ROTI (TANDALACHI BHAKRI ) FEW DAYS AGO I NOTICED HE WAS HOWLING LIKE A SMALL DOG. AND MY DAD SAID AS IT IS COLD OUTSIDE HE MUST BE FEELING COLD TOO. SO WE TOOK HIM OUT IN SUN AND HE STARTED CRAWLING ON LAND. ALMOST FOR 1 2 HOURS HE WAS ENJOYING AND WE OFTEN ALMOST 3 4 TIMES A WEEK WE DO THIS SINCE LAST 2 AND HALF YEARS. WE TAKE HIM OUT IN SUN FOR ATLEAST 2 3 HOURS.( ON PLAIN LAND NOT ON SAND OR GRASS ) SO WE DID THE SAME THIS TIME AND MADE A SMALL CHANGE OF CHANGING HIS WATER FROM REGULAR TO LUKEWARM AND HE WAS FINE AGAIN. HE STOPPED HOWLING WITHIN A DAY OR 2 AND HE IS FINE. BUT NOW AGAIN AFTER 15 DAYS I AM OBSERVING HE IS NOT EATING MUCH LIKE BEFORE. YESTERDAY HE DIDN'T EAT RICE AND TODAY HE DIDN'T EAT BHAKRI . I AM WORRIE . WHY HAS HE STOPPED EATING ? IS IT NORMAL ? I HAVE CHANGED THE WATER TO LUKEWARM. AND THIS IS JUST HAPPENING NOWADAYS. EARLIER FOR 2 AND HALF YEARS HE WAS FINE. NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM WE HAD. BUT NOW ONE OR THE OTHER NEW THINGS KEEP HAPPENING. I AM BIT WORRIED. ALSO IF U CAN DO LET ME KNOW IF IT IS MALE OR FEMALE TURTLE. AND DO LET ME KNOW ABOUT HIS CARE. I DONT WANT TO TAKE HIM TO ANY VETERINARY DOCTOR OR GIVE HIM ANY PILLS. I WANT TO CURE HIM MORE NATURALLY IN GOOD WAY.
THANK YOU.
HOPE YOU REPLY ASAP.
If you are talking about Indian leatherback flap shell shell turtle, they are non vegetarian by nature. I am having one since last 18 years. Mine does eat chappati when hungry, but loves chicken, boiled eggs and fish.
DeleteDuring winters turtle like bears also hibernate and don't eat anything. Mine stops eating by end of November and start eating again only after 2-3ed week of Feb. It will depend on the temperature of your area. Turtles breath in air not underwater, so they take out their snout every now n then and inhale, even during sleeping.
Never read anything about turtle howling.
Hope this helps.
Hello I have a small turtle (Indian Flapshell) I can't differentiate whether it's male or female. I assume that she is female. My turtle is not eating and it is floating every now and then. I have her since 1 year and she has respiratory problems and gastrointestinal problems. She doesn't sleep inside water when she is unwell always sleeps on my bed. What to do? Which medicine to give? To treat her?

ReplyDeleteI have an Indian flapshell turtle which doesn't like to stay in water for long, his skin has became dry and wrinkled.. today we noticed some bleeding through yhe cracked skin. What should be done as of now?
ReplyDeleteYou take water muddy put them in wet mud fast
DeleteFirst of all if it becomes aggresive in water...it is its habit...nothing to worry ...ke him be in water throughout the night and take him iyt during day and he wikk rest throught the day...if any little or small problem is with his shell put a little potassium permangnate crystal until water turns slight pink and keep her in that water during night...it will reduce baterial growth on shell
DeleteI found an adult Indian flapshell turtle weighing between 6 to 9 kgs today, tonight she is my guest, after getting stonned I decided to keep her, but she will be released into the wild, they know to take care of themselves more than we know...so release all such creatures which belong to the wild...there is where they belong, this is what the INDIAN FLAPSHELL TURTLE told me...
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the above comments, reading about bacteria in one of the above comments made me realised holding her back will be a bad DECISION, I consider her as an Angel, and will release her tomorrow morning into the wilds...
Love you planet...
what bacteria...??

DeleteHello sir,
ReplyDeleteA flapshell turtle was brought to me from a girl working in the fields few weeks back. It was perfectly fine then and it was eating well. I fed it with pellets and wheat flour tiny balls. I keep it in water only while feeding since it tries to hide in darkness. But now, I see that whenever I put it in water, it starts getting restless and tries to flap its feet and come out of the water and do not even eat much. And as soon as I take it out of water, it runs off to some darker and dry area. And secondly, I can see bubbles out of its nostrils sometimes and heavy breathing. It does eat, but lesser than before and sleeps everytime. Is this something worth worrying about? Kindly Guide.
No sir, he is just a little afraid sometime....as he will be shock if someone suddenly comes in his front and his heavy breathing means that he is a little afraid and wants to be alone for sometime...
DeleteThis is exact problem with me sir/madam please help me to know what should I feed my tortoise ( punctata )
DeleteMine flapsheel turtle does same
DeleteHai, mine is not eating anything, around 15days it didn't eat. Please recommend me what can I feed for it daily
ReplyDeleteIf he is not eating first keep him in water and put his turtle food and some green vegetable in water...water should be just 2 inch above his shell...if he doesn't eat try puting some small fishes in water.. then to if he doesn't eat...force feed him...before force feeding please watch video of how to force feed a turtle....always force feed with a dropper from side of his mouth...watermelon juice carrot juice or spinach juice will do the work
DeleteThey eat aquatic earthworms.i have one I tried leafs but not eating.now I tried small worms in water now he eating

If you have any clue of what has happend to him please let me know! His condition is worrying me.
